Freelander rear door.
Having a problem with the tailgate glass in a 2000 Freelander. When you go to open the tail gate the glass is supposed to come down a short way clear of the top seals so you can open the tailgate. Trouble is this one has stopped coming down far enough. You can hear the motor operating and the glass comes down a little way so that you can just open the tailgate with the glass scraping past the top seals; then if you push it down with your hand the extra couple of inches you can close the tailgate and the glass goes up OK.
I've had a look in the Haynes manual and thought maybe the clamps on to the glass had come loose - but no, they're OK.
Seems to be somethimng in there called a regulator but thought I'd ask for advice before going any further. Maybe someone else has had this problem?
Would be most grateful for any suggestions!!
Cliff.

Hi Cliff,
From your description, it sounds as though all the correct bits are talking to each other as it's going through all of the correct motions (i.e. the micro-switch in the door handle is telling the ECU to drop the glass a touch before releasing the catch). However, it's just not dropping the glass enough.
So, I would tend to agree with the manual that it's probably a problem with the regulator/motor.

I have had problems like this on a couple of cars Ive owned with electric windows. They always went up ok but down was problem. It felt like the seals were stuck to they glass. I found that it was the way the seals were facing to keep out water and the they were generaly full of dust and muck generating more friction in one direction than the other a bit like a valve.. I pulled them apart and cleaned every thing. Good as gold. Its just a thought and wont hurt to rule it out before you throw some money at it.
