Not familia with your ABS setup .... But common mistakes are ... Did you put the seal in the right way ... How much / what level / did you fill the oil into the swivel
Is it leaking from the top swivle pin??
Mike
I did a an overhaul/reseal job on one of my swivels last week, and after a few hours driving its leaking again
Its a '97 model with ABS and I'm running oil in the swivel.
Its a bit hard to tell exactly where its coming from, but only leaks when you are moving and is originating high on the swivel - looks like its either coming from the ABS sensor seal or from around the upper pin.
I'm wondering if there should be any type of sealant on or around the shims of the upper pin?
I'll probably just get another ABS sensor seal for a start (I didn't replace it as there wasn't one in the kit I got), but is there anywhere else high on the swivel that is prone to leaking that I could have overlooked?

Thanks Mike.
The ABS swivel just has a slightly different bearing arrangement in the upper swivel pin to allow the ABS sensor to go down through the middle of the pin. It has a cylindrical bush and a thrust bearing instead of the normal tapered roller bearing.
There is a small cup seal (about 12mm internal) in the top of the swivel pin that seals the pin to the sensor.
Yes, the seal is in the correct way, and I filled the swivel with oil up to the level of the filler plug.
I have to remove the upper swivel pin bolts anyway to fit a new seal, so I think I'll just pull the pin out, clean it all up with solvent and run a fillet of sealant around the pin once its put back together. That should make sure it cant leak!!

Dunno about yours ... but on my RRC (which should be the same set-up as yours)
I have 3 level plugs
1 at the top for filling ....
1 in the middle for the "oil level" ...
1 at the bottom for draining ...
Are you filling the swivel ALL the way to the top??? .... If so .... NO WONDER it leaks

Only 1 plug on mine - at approx 10 o'clock position. I filled it up to the bottom of the hole.
There is a machined flat for a drain plug but hasn't been drilled/tapped - presumably as by '97 they were running the one-shot grease instead of oil.
Steve
.... Usually oil filled swivels are only topped up to 1/2 way ... not to the very top fill hole .... I don't have a photo of my swivel ... but have a look to see if you have a plug at the 9 o'clock position (half way) ... should be a plug with a 3mm spanner "square end"
If you completely fill the swivel ... then the oil just pressurises and then leaks out thru the swivel ball seal
Do you have access to a RRC or a 92 Disco??? to compare .... "Shopping center Carparks" are handy for this ....

I'm not sure on the set up of Disco 1's with ABS , but The Swivel housing on my Disco 1 ( non ABS ), has a Filler Plug , an inspection plug and a Drain Plug on RHS , and on the LHS swivel it only has a Filler Plug , presumably , also the side needing to be filled with oil should be topped up to the Lip ( I do on mine ) with the vehicle parked on Flat ground and the Wheel on Full Lock to the direction of that swivel housing being filled.my New Seals never leaked until now because Seals are worn.
Thanks for following me through with this one guys.
The more I think about it I've just been really dumb and needed to take a step back and think about whats going on.
I've done a bit more research and it definitely appears I've got the one-shot grease swivels. They only came with a filler hole (no level or drain).
I don't think it's pressurising, rather just leaking out around the top swivel pin when on acute angles as the level was so high. I reckon 10 or 15 degrees nose up would have had the oil level up around the pin and as there's no gasket there it would have made its way out.
I'm going to drain the oil out and either whack the one-shot grease in it or measure an equivalent amount of oil and put that in. I'll decide on the drive home tonight which option.
Should have just left the shaft seal out while I had it apart, and checked the level in the diff filler hole!!

Disco_Owner - You've been holding out on me....you never said you'd done an awesome tutorial with piccys on how to do the oil level
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...check-how.html
After looking at those piccy's I can see a machined flat on mine where the level plug should be. I drained about 400mls out then topped up using a piece of wire as a dipstick to get to the correct level. Hopefully thats fixed it.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Steveg another member suggested I get in touch with you, I have a county with the V8 and I want to convert it to a300 Tdi and boxes from a disco 1 I have . I am having a bugger of a time trying to find details and changeover parts needed. Apparently your County had a 300 Tdi in it when you bought it. Do you have any tips or know where I can get details ie.. engine mount placement , defender selector(Disco appear to be further forward)
Any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time
Craig
