Whine, gear box or T case?

    Hi All,
I replaced my tcase with an Ashcroft exchange unit about 1000Kms ago and almost streight away noticed a very loud screaming whine on de-accelaration in 4 and 5th gears (BTW 96 defender) Now prior to the Tcase exchange the drive train was so noisy I would not have noticed an orchestra sitting next to me playing at full tilt. So the question is: is the gear box on the way out (approx 215000km) or is it my new and very expensive tcase whinning?
    Thanks
    Mal

The gearbox output shaft and the T/case input gear will not be a matched set anymore. Its really common for them to whine unless you do the gearbox as well or swap your old T/case input gear back.

If it is the input gear, the whine will be coupled with and proportional to road speed - eg the whine will have the same pitch at the same speed irrespective of whether you are in 4th or 5th. You'll be able to duplicate the same effect in low ratio at lower speed.

It's not uncommon for input gears to howl if replaced but it's not the output shaft and the input gear causing it. It's the input gear and the intermediate gear cluster whining because of the change in the mesh pattern.

I found with my trans case a professional shop here in WA put the longer bolts that hold the case to the gearbox in the wrong way

There is one shorter bolt in the bolt set and that must go in the bottom hole on the trans case

The longer bolt in my case inserted in the bottom hole was pushing up against the gears in the trans case and making it howl. Change the bolts around and replace the o ring on the shaft as they were squashed and the trans case is now quiet

So I hope who ever installed the case knows this as I was told a lot of shops dont

    Cheers

I can tell you if you can tell me this:

"If it is the input gear, the whine will be coupled with and proportional to road speed - eg the whine will have the same pitch at the same speed irrespective of whether you are in 4th or 5th."

    So is it?
