What sort of cooler did you fit Goldey?
That's bad news with your ZF:( Tranny builders = $$$$:(
Would have been more fun to break with the blower it than have it slowly die:twisted:
I should be my ZF that is dieing with the way mine gets treated. I guess the 3.5 doesn't have enough torque to kill it.
I like the idea of converting a 4HP24 to run with no electronics:cool:
You have a nice Rangie there so will be worth the coin get a ZF built up so long as it's a keeper.
Tony
I'm slowly swinging away from ZF all together :(
nice to drive an Auto , but It's going to be exxy for a rebuild , and if it craps itself again down the track Big $$$$$ again.
sooo, I'm thinking R380 would be a very nice Combo with Defender LT230 offroad with my 4.11 's :twisted::twisted:
you still wanna sell that R380 ?:D:D:D
If you are putting real power through a ZF I would/have most definately back this comment from Goldey. Bruce Davis does an excellent additional unit.
Also... I also think the ZF is stonger than the R380. The R380 will keep dropping 5th gear. The ZF is most vulnerable in 1st gear, but keep it cool.
its not first thats the problem in the zfs,,,
its the primary clutch pack. it cops everything, if it lets go you loose the lot.
at least the r380 leaves you 4 gears if you happen to strip 5th.. :)
Simon, that's all well and good if my driving was mainly in 5th gear offroad, however that's not to be the case.
I only utilise 1st 2nd gear with my current R380 in the disco.
so I assume it would be the same with the rangie If I was to have a manual
Box put in it , so the 5th won't really come into it.
Unless towing which I stay clear of towing in 5th anyways.
I lurve the Cruising feeling in Auto and not having to change gears
with a V8 behind it.:(
however , It is much cheaper to get an R380 rebuilt than a ZF
and they are a strong box and can take quite a bit of punishment.
Yes you can get the 24 computer modded back to valve body. That's what mine was before it was killed:eek:. It is now beefed up beyond that.
As Dave said you cook the front clutch pack and it ain't going far!
Bruce Davis can arrange it as he did the original job on my rig. Mine was then killed and rebuilt badly by the next mod in Canberra and since been rebuilt again through my friends and been beefed up even more. This time they also replaced the sump, missing oil pickup, wrongly fitted flex plate and incorrect restricted cooler lines.
Guess I wouldn't have cooked it myself if the mob who left bits out and fitted some bits back to front had done the job right in the first place.
If you are rebuilding the ZF fit as big an oil cooler as you can and also a temp guage.
May be. But it has a good 300Tdi bolted to it. Would suit your disco best.
Well... Even after your ZF has failed I'm still determined to run one in mine:eek: After I blow the 1st one I hope I learn how much they will take and conserve the next one.(Bit like my series Land Rovers).( Or keep buying wrecked Rangies and Discos for spares.
Tony
Just thinking your going to have to make some ramps off that driveway of yours to do this as pulling a transmision out at 30 deg may be awkward. Or trailer it up here and do it on a slab with a quad lifter:) I don't have a hoist other than a front end loader or two:twisted: You may have to clear some space in my shed 1st though:(
