    ZF Auto

seems like the ZF Auto is the flavour of the month atm...

Well , the Rover V8 is Running great .......Touch wood ....

However the Little men with hammers are at it tapping away inside the ZF , The Box was making a grinding sort of a rattle prior to heads coming off for Head-Gasket replacement , so there is no surprises there....However this rattle is now getting worse.......

so what are my options ,

    Standard Rebuild on the ZF

or// seeing a Supercharger kit will be going in at a later period ,perhaps beef up the ZF with 4HP24 internals .....

Should I start another Thread , "Rebuilding a ZF Auto"

In Sydney I really don't know.

When I was looking around to get this done there was nobody that I could find that I was confident in and who had experience in doing this.

I ended up going to Melbourne for a couple of reasons - we were houseboating on the Murray for a week and then down to Melbourne to catch up with friends and go 4WDing, so while I was down there I had AMV drop the box and do the rebuild with 24 parts. They had one of their boxs rebuilt to spec and then swapped them over. As I understand it A&B transmissions down there are the absolute gurus. While it was being done I sat in a hotel and plowed through a crap load of work in preparation for an upcoming inspection that work was about to have.

I'm my opinion, Melbourne is where all of the ZF gurus are.

Also, the rebuild on the 22 doesn't give a full 24 spec transmission. They are able to change clutches etc, but 1st gear, TC, pump etc remain 22. On teh V8 the parts are probably also available to upgrade also, but it may also be worth sussing out the purchase of a 24 such as from Andy e and finding out if the controls can be swapped over from electronic to regular from your current box or similar. This will give you the full 24 spec with all upgraded parts such as clutches, pump, TC, and some of the internal mechanicals are physically bigger also to better handle the greater torque. I think the difference in rating is 380Nm for the 4HP22/EH and about 480Nm for the 4HP24EH.

    FWIW

I have recently dealt with A&B Transmissions in Melbourne (4 mths ago). They did a fully rebuilt to spec exchange ZF (hydraulic controlled, so 22 spec) for my 98 Disco. The only thing extra I requested was the third gear lockup so I could tow a little easier. They arranged all the transport to and from my mechanic up here in Newcastle.

Cost a bomb, but anything to do with ZF and rebuild in the same sentence elicited either laughter or groans from everyone except for A&B and the dollars estimate was all within buggar all of each other. This way I was confident (on the advice of others) that I was getting a quality product.

Just make sure when you do get a rebuild unit, investigate putting a decent size oil cooler on the auto. This was something I did for the old unit before it carked it and it probably extended its life by about a year. Now I have three times the cooler size as standard and a fully rebuilt ZF by the experts, so I'm feeling pretty safe for a little while.

    Cheers
