Engine Tick - What is it?

Well did valve clearances today on mine and my old mans.

We did his first, all sounded good when turning the motor over by hand.

But when we got to doing mine, every time a spring was fully compressed there was a ticky sort of noise as though the spring was seating or turning slightly and catching. Or that the valve itself was catching on something inside the head.

It has steadily become more noticeable this week :(

Any ideas?

If not then I'll take it to a mate of mine who will hopefully know. Trouble is catching him when he's not busy

Landy mechanic had a look at it today. He reckons it's both tappets and an exhaust leak :(

It shall be fixed. When I can find it :p

Dropped it into another mechanic a while back

He couldn't find anything, except when he put a stethescope (did I spell that right Ron? ) onto No. 1 cylinder there was a noticeable difference in the sound. More high pitched and tinny than the other 3.

Just one thing I have been thinking of lately, for a while it had a smashed valve cap on No.1 valve, I didn't notice until I did valve clearances. When he was checking the motor over he did say that that same valve was a bit loose.

I put it to the blokes at work and they think that there is a possibility it has worn the hard facing off the rocker shaft

Could this be the case?

Jock, is it down on power a bit too? The other possibility is that the delivery valve spring in the pump is broken or the 'distance piece' in the delivery valve is worn away. This will create a ticking type of noise in the injector line and a drop in performance from that cylinder.

You can remove the number 1 injector line and unscrew the delivery valve off the back of the pump(Clean environment, clean the pump body off first) and you will see a spring and a small steel insert in the end of the spring. This is the spring and 'distance piece' (so Bosch describe it:D) If either is damaged or looks worn away, this may be the fault.

Also, check around the back of the head behind no4 cylinder for signs of head gasket leaking gasses. This will give a similar ticking noise, and the leak only needs to be small so look carefully for small amounts of black carbon etc, or hold you hand against the back of the head/ block area while revving the engine.

The Vacuum pump can tick also as one of the valves can work loose inside, and the lift pump arm could also be the culprit.

I reckon there is a possibility it's down on power a bit, and the fuel economy isn't too crash hot. Upon saying that some of it may be due to my right foot twitching a bit too much :p

I'll check that head gasket and if it's not that then I'll buy myself a can of Brake Cleaner and check out that spring.

If its neither how do I test the lift pump?

Beleive it or not we had nice blue skies at Savage :)

Pulled the final drive of a 25 ton Excavator and found not one but both were buggered :( at $18,000 a pop I'm sure glad I'm not paying for it :p

I pulled that pump apart today. Bloody #1 injector line is the most annoying one to get to :p

Nothing wrong there at all.

How can I test the lift pump? are they worth much?

Been thinking a bit more about this

That number one valve that had the smashed lash cap.

Could it, being out of adjustment for so long, have hammered the cam follower and somehow damaged it causing it to tick?

I'll have to stick the stethoscope down there and see (well hear :p )

Any thoughts?

FWIW my head gasket leak started as a tick noise. It steadily got worse (louder).

It was a gasket leak between cyl 4 and rear of the head. It was easy to work out by putting your hand between the firewall and the cyl head while the engine was running. You can feel the puff of air eascaping (and your hand goes black).

Mildly different engine, sure...but my 2.25P had a very noisy tap tap tap and it turned out to be the hard case and a bit more worn off the rocker shaft:

The rocker was moving laterally/sideways on the rocker shaft. I wondered why I could never get the tappets adjusted properly on that cylinder. Do any of your rockers wiggle laterally on the shaft? It wouldn't need to be much but it will escalate. Mine had a small chunk of metal doing the damage.

Hey mate

Last time I had the head off the rocker all looked fine from memory, engine has only done 115,000 with regular oil changes so I hoping I don't have that much wear in there :eek:

Been there :p I had the head off not long ago fitting a new upgraded version
