what is the best alternative diesel

hi ya all what is the best alternative diesel to fit to a defender?
I don't want a dragster, but want a bit more go(maybe) but overall i want a tough lump with high realiabilty.
Having worked for defence as a civvy the blokes used to slate the isuzu lump claiming it was sluggish in the 6x6 ambo bodies i imagine these are somewhat heavier than my 130, but then you hear that the isuzu lump eats gearboxes like daddy-o.
I understand the brazilian rebored landy lump is great but rare as rocking horse pooh and i don't know any costs or where to find them, are they still shipped ? cheers all

the reason the 6x6 are slow is because they are heavier to start with then they are loaded to the hilt. the izusu engine is a great stong and reliable, the reason they have a reputation for braking gearboxs is because people put the wrong box behind the engine,in the army they have the LT95 4 speed box and this is strong but if you want to run a R380 5 speed you have to get it built for it or it will rattle to pieces. the army 4x4 has the izusu motor but no turbo where the 6x6 engine has a turbo but if played with and a td5 turbo fitted they go much better. you know you can get better turbos for your engine and tweak the fuel pump.

Have a browse through the Isuzu section of this forum and you will find all the info you need on 4BD1's and adding turbos etc.
