Nothing when stopping in 1st. TDi

    Hi all, im new

I have a 97 tdi with a problem. When driving in first around car parks and stuff, when i come to a complete stop and the go to take off again i have no engine response when i plant the gas. It decides to start moving again after about 5-10 seconds, what gives and any solutions or is this normal? I have only had the boy a short while, but i don't think it's normal.

Other then that it's a brilliant piece of machinery and im glad i bought him.

Does the engine rev up but doesn't drive or does the engine itself take time to go. Pat

Couldn't hurt to take a look at you accelerator cable.
Look for slack at the injector pump end, if slack tighten the plastic screw to remove.

nice1guv. The cable was slightly loose, half a turn and it took up slack so now there is a bit more tention on the throttle body. I will take her for a drive shortly to see if that fixed things.

Pat303, the engine does not rev at all, as if idling. After a couple of second and a few pumps of the foot i eventually get engine response.

Ill let you guysno what happens when i take around the block. Thanks

deffinately nothing to do with the cable. Took for a quick spin and it still did it. Only in first, coming down gears into first isn't an issue. I guess a may have to switch into 2nd around car parks. Very strange

Try looking at the fuel delivery. If there isn't a cloud of black smoke at the same time, then the pause may be related to fuel line cracked or air being sucked in at the sedimenter. (Or even failed lift pump) Try parking nose down overnight and see if there is a leak or it's really hard to start in the morning.

Hey langy, it is quite hard to start in the morning. It has to turn over a number of times before it will fire up and the first 100 metres or so it is real sluggish and has once stalled on me well into second.
Ill have a look at the fuel line and delivery point tomorrow.
Do you think the fuel pump and lines may need replacing?

    do lift pumps need priming?

and are these the ones that "break" when over-pumped?

I thought the 300Tdi could do without the lift pump? I am sure I read somewhere about removing it completely.

    But I could be wrong.
