No.
The lift pump is needed to provide a positive head to the injector pump.
Many drivers are only aware of its existence when their vehicle displays sluggish performance as the injector pump doesn't/can't always pull the required quantity of fuel up from the tank.
Removing it entirely is dumb.
Replacing the mechanical pump with an electric one is fine, and really helps when bleeding the fuel system.
Pedro, yes, the lift pump is the one that can sometimes fail when the priming handle is used to prime the system. Never had it happen and I still prime after a filter change, but plenty have had it fail prematurely.

and hasn't stalled on me since. Im gonna do a full service on her including all the filters and fluids and clean out the water seperater which will hopefully irradicate the problem all together. If not i will change the lift pump, glow plugs and injectors (hopefully not injectors they are expensive) in that order. Crossing my fingers it doesn't come to that.
