My disco had a clunk under the dash. It was related to the adjustable height steering wheel and had a bit of play in it. It wasn't loose, just a bit of play and it made a clunking noise. Just a thought?
noises do travel,I had what sounded like a clunk coming from around the dash area turned out to be the bullbar was contacting the guard over bumps took ages to find and this also started after a off road trip.
No problems now made my own bar and ditched the ARB one.

On my D2 it turned out to be a snapped chassis mount (on bot sides!).
