in regards to the all terrains, its the first ive ever heard of the belts being exposed on the sidewalls through anything other than physical damage
G'Day All,
I'm chasing around now for a 2002 to 2004 Defender Extreme and I've come across one where the owner has a spare set of BFG All Terrains (tyres only) which he's offering to "throw in at a discount".
I would be looking to put BFG Mud Terrains on any Defernder I bought once the tyres it came with wore out, rather than All Terrains, but it occurs to me that either tyre might rub on the radius arms on full lock.
As the Extreme is fitted with alloy rims it would be an expensive exercise if I ended up having to get a new set of rims with negative offset to accommodate these "discounted" tyres.
Can anybody help with this please?
Also :-
(a) any views on All Terrains vs Mud Terrains, and
(b) I've seen a comment on exploroz.com about "steel wires sticking out of the sidewall" of an All Terrian which the owner felt was due to a manufacturuing fault. I've seen other comments of a similar nature and of a lack of customer service from BFG. Anyone familar with these issues?
Many thanks.![]()

Rubbing will depend on the size of the tyres and if it’s got a lift etc.....
What size are the tyres.

Thanks Benny IIA and nice1guv.
I haven't seen the Deefer yet let alone the extra set of tyres so I don't know their size. I do know that the suspension is as original with no lift.
In my background I've fitted tyres "one profile size size up" onto original rims and not had problems. However, I've not done this on any 4WD and certainly not on the County I owned a few years back which I assume would be similar to a Defender in its steering and suspension set up.
