Do a search for Viscous Coupling or Viscous Fan on here.

BTW, The way I remember is that it undoes in the same direction as the fan rotates.

    Hi Daid
You can get the radiator out without removing the fan/hub.Undo aircon evaporator, undo oil cooler, intercooler out(flush it out with solvent whilst out to remove oil residue, its a service task),drop the shroud back as far as possible. The radiator will come out,BE VERY GENTLE and BEWARE OF LOWER FAN BLADES!!!.Its tight but does save you a HEAP of work. The secont time I did this I knicked 1 coolant tube had to crimp and solder it

The fan on a TD5 is NORMAL thread.

A big spanner, and a mallet will remove it. It is NORMAL thread. Not LH.

it is worth removing it IMO. Just for space, and a reduction in the risk of damage.

I was just about to say (with confidence) its a LH thread! Now Im not 100% sure!

You will need to look and see which way the fan rotates with the engine. To remove it, it will need a knock the other way.

Regardless of the LH/RH thread issue, I agree wit Pete - MUCH easier to take it out to give a bit more space.

Hi, it is a normal thread on the viscous coupling pulley (NOT left hand). A long spanner and a knock with a mallet or decent size wood block on the end of the spanner usually frees the pulley.

Umm, are you sure? I am pretty sure they are undone by turning in the same direction as the fan rotates.

If you think about it, the belt drives the pulley (and therefore the thread on the water pump) such that it tries to screw into the nut on the coupling. If it were the other way, the water pump could unscrew from the viscous coupling.

Looking at the engine from the front (from the radiator). anti-clockwise removes the nut. This is the same for both the 4 litre V8 and the TD5. I just went out to the workshop and spun a fan on and off each.

And which way does the fan rotate in operation?

LOL. This has come up before with people swearing it was LH, and I have my bloody car apart so many times I made a note of which way it was! I even wrote it on my fan spanner so I don't forget!
