deffinatly looks like a head gasket, what dose the header tank do? over pressurise? loose coolant and how much?
are there bubbles in the coolant when the engine is running?

    Gone

It's green coolant as well so you are not off to a good start.

The Td5 will pressurize for some time before they blow the headgasket. Even then you could keep driving as long as you can keep the water in it i.e don't ever let the reservoir run under half.

With the k's that it has done you are right in the zone of headgasket replacement time.

you might get lucky and find that its the heater return pipe that runs over the top corroded away and leaking down, but I doubt it....

thats wet above the gasket......looks like its blowing back from the front of the engine......

also....you need to flush out the green coolant......and go back to the red stuff......

If your are going to change coolants IE: glycol (normally but not always green) to OTE (Normally but not always red) which is what Land Rover say a TD5 should have, or from OTE to glycol then the cooling system MUST be flushed with the CORECT cleaner for the coolant that is being REMOVED.

Do NOT EVER let the two mix.

    There are threads about this.

    Thanks Tony !!!!!!
I am affraid it's to late...
Got it checked - it is head gasked - some unusual external leak from water jet somewhere between 4 and 5 th cilinder.
Just hoping that head is not toasted.......
I didn'y know that coolant is so b....y important.
I was told that 160 K is good time for head service anyway...

for now I will service my head and cool it with .... Carlton - since I use train to get to work
    Cheers !

Just to ask a question re this. If the headgasket goes and not from overheating, does it just require a strip down and rebuild i.e. gasket set for the job and I understand new headbolts. The head itself would be in good nick after a check or does this mean the head needs work in any regards .
