    285/75/16's on a D1

I did a bit of a search and couldnt find much on this topic so though i might just go on ahead and ask anyways.

The tyres on the disco will need updating by the end of the year and at present im running some 235/85/16 muddies, 32's basically. I have fitted 4.11:1 crown wheel and pinion gears so can run the bigger tyres without change in gearing overall. The 32's im running still seem to be a bit small for the gearing change and others have told me 33's are best with the 4.11's, not sure how true this is. Anyway what im getting at is im thinking of changing to 285/75/16's next, its about a 30mm increase in diameter (806mm uo to about 836mm or there abouts) but its a 50mm increase in width. Im thinking I will need to get some different rims aswell to run these tyres as the 7in wide rims I have arent wide enough as the minimum width for the tyres is 7.5in and recommended is 8in.

I have pretty well trimmed the guards out so that shouldnt be an issue but am i going to need a set offset and if so what should it be? I know bugger all about this so be clear. I take it positive offset is outwards and negative offset is inwards, and I also assume i need positive offset if this is correct to move the wheels outwards, but how many mm's of offset do i need?

    Thanks, Matt

    mat,
me new ute has the 90's tyres and rims on it, 285's on 7'' rims with an 86mm back space. cant comment on what touches at the rear as its a ute...but for the front its only the inside edge of the pass side front well that just rubs. i also have the OE flares fitted and the tyres are inline, just, with them.

its the rear thats going to be the issue.

i have an air hacksaw and a plsma cutter

    cheers phil

Discovery I will need a 2” body lift kit and will probably need to fit flares. offset of -25 mm will do it for the 16x8 Rims

I've seen 33" on Disco 1's without a Body lift but there is some scrubing on Full Flex with flares fitted

Hi Phil, do you reckon the issue would be rubbing on the doors or the back of the wheel arch? I dont mind cutting more from the back of the wheel arches but its obviously more difficult to cut it from near the doors.

The tyres will definitely need doing so maybe i will go with 265/75/16's for now and get the lift, flares etc sorted so the next time i need new tyres i can fit the 33's.

What is the rolling diameter of the 255's?

Boxer fitted 285/75/16's under just a 2'' coil lift
Don't quote me on this but i think 255's measure around about 33.3''s

Ok, did some looking around, the 255's are about the same diameter as the 285's but obviously they are 30mm less in width. Would this be enough with a 2in suspension lift and trimmed gaurds on a D1 or am i better running with the 265/75/16's for now until i can sort the lift and flares etc?

In the end the 265's are only 30mm less diameter so going the 285 or the 255 only gives 15mm more in ground clearance diff wise, and the 255 isnt as wide.

Quick calc show that the tallest tyre out of the lot mentioned is the 255 85 at 33" folowed by the 285 75 at 32.8" then 235 85 at 31.7" and last is the 265 75 at 31.6". In otherwords not much between 285/75 and 255/85 at around 33" and the 265/75 and 235/85 at a bit over 31.5"

When I fitted 255/85R16 on my 3 door disco with no body lift, I needed to do a fair bit of cutting.

    At the rear :
    Cut rear of guard.
Cut top of sheetmetal that hold mudflaps. Rebend to push crease line further back.
Guard lip need to be bent up or it will catch on edge of tyre.
Trim all bolts flush as it will rub the top of the wheel arch.

    At the front :
Cut rear of guard and maybe end of sill. (sill depends on quality of build, they all vary)
