    I'm clutching at straws !

Daughters 3ootdi disco had new clutch & hydraulics 12 months & 20k's back. Struggled home 2 days ago with it not disengaging. Pedal initially very hard.but useless. Heard about throwout forks wearing thru,Checked fluid level (good ) no leaks. Pulled out slave ,looked good, felt pushrod and lever movement & it felt "catchy " Assumed ( careless ) it was lever worn thru. Removed the box with some difficulty & forum help. Lever OK. Damn !All looks OK I guess a workshop would renew the lot & presto ,fixed. Can't afford to waste money. Can a hydraulic modulator cause this if stuffed & how to tell ? What would be other prime suspects ? Plate sticking to flywheel or P/Plate, Driven plate not sliding on spline. All was lubed appropriately on assembly. When parking to strip down, clutch squealed when forced to slip by stopping on brakes as motor was killed. Any clues appreciated.

do d1's have the same plastic thrust bearing as the d2?, if so could be that as it failed on mine which stopped the ability to select any gear.
just taking a stab in the dark but gives something to consider.
    cheers

Possible problems, some of which you have checked.

    Fluid level normal
If the pedal is going right down and it is not disengaging -
    1. Pedal easy to press - faulty master cylinder, or (unlikely) slave cylinder.
    2. Pedal pressure about normal,
    a) Incorrectly adjusted master cylinder pushrod or loose master cylinder
    b) Clutch plate or pressure plate damaged (possible but unlikely)
    c) Plastic bit of release bearing damaged
    d) driven plate seized on shaft or pilot bearing/bush seized throwout bearing seized on (but it would have given trouble getting gearbox out)
    3. Pedal pressure much higher than normal - hydraulic circuit blocked and you are bulging the flexible line, or the throwout bearing carrier is seized on the tube it is on.

Hope some of these ideas help.

Strong suspicion that daughter has somehow killed the clutch: either the pressure plate or driven plate. The clutch shouldn't squeal - it should stall the engine. The driven plate may be glazed over. And, did you get a new pressure plate 12 months ago? The fingers of the pressure plate can loose their spring.

Found the problem,One of the spring sets in the driven plate had come out ! the piece of metal on the outside of the springs had broken away and of course left the springs ( inner & outer ) floating. Must have jammed the works. Thanks for the help. It is nice to know that there are fellow enthusiasts out there ever ready to help. Regards Ian

At least you found the problem though, i bought my disco cheap with a broken main shaft in the g'box, went through it and found the centre of the clutch had stripped out and the springs were running wild
