Rear diff, front diff, looks the same to me

So, is the rear diff housing the same as the front diff housing on a D1 V8 ?

They look the same to me, even down to the tapped holes for the steering damper being present in the rear diff. Are they interchangeable?

Same part nos. except for models with the flex coupling instead of UJs.

Don't forget there are 10 spline and 24 spline variants.

FTC2750 10 spline, 4 bolt drive flange - front and rear
FTC3272 24 spline, 4 bolt drive flange - front and rear
FTC3273 24 spline, 3 bolt drive flange (donut), rear

There is a rear diff available that I'm thinking of getting so I can replace all the seals, fit a front locker to it, and still have a car to drive around in while I do so.

That way I can collect all the bits before pulling the steering arms off and the front diff out and swopping it for the locker and heavy duty arms, without the Mrs finding out

They look the same to me, one thing though, what about the trailing arm and radious arm brackets on the housing's, they'd be different from front to rear wouldn't they?

Sorry, I should have been more specific.
I'm only interested in the diff centre housing, not the whole axle.

Quick thought, would that mean that the crown and pinion wheel would be turning the other way when swopped from front to back?

If so the teeth would be contacting on the other side negating any previous wear?

Yep i can confirm that the centre's are interchangable, about to put a front ARB air locker in the rear of my d1
