No SIII ever had standard power steering.

Yes there are kits avaiable, usually incorporating a hydraulic ram where the steering damper goes. These systems offer very little feedback through the steering wheel and make fast cornering, or driving on slippery ground dangerous (I had one & removed it).

While the SIII steering may feel heavy or not quite precise, when you get used to it (provided all the components are in good order) you can quite precisely throw the vehicle about with ease and excellent feedback through the wheel. The steering box is a variable pitch worm & roller, so that steering effort is assisted a little more when turning hard. This same steering design gives it the vague feel when coming from a rack & pinion car.

The steering is always better on a flat or gravel road, as the SIII didn't come preset for road camber. The wheel seems to always need some correction on the road, but off road it tracks so true.

If you do want power steering, the best thing would be to get a system from a Range Rover or Discovery, and have the relay box welded to your chassis, replace the steering wheel and run a proper Power Steering system. There's a guy in Melbourne's east who's done a lot of these conversions. PM me (send private message) for his contact details.

If you do a search on this forum, you should be able to find extensive discussions of the subject.

Welcome to Series Land Rover ownership.
