94 auto Disco wont engage gear first time

I start the engine, put the car into drive and nothing happens, in fact nothing happens in any gear. I sit for a few minutes moving the gear lever back and forward in an effort to engage any gear and yet nothing happens.
I turn the engine off, wait a few minutes, restart the car and drive away.
    This happens everytime.
It seems i need to run the car for a few minutes, turn the engine off and wait, then restart in order to engage gears.
Once i complete this sequence the car drives perfectly and gives me no problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers Clunie.

The first step would be to check the ATF level.

The second step is take it to a Auto box shop & get a oil flush & service kit in it

The ATF indicater shows fluid level is well above full into the area of "do not overfill"
    Could this be the problem??

Are you checking it with the engine running?

Ok, trans fluid level ok when running cold.
But guess what, engine oil indicater showed nothing. Put in 4 litres of motor oil, perhaps this could be the problem?
I know i sound like an idiot, the car was given to me last week and assumed the previous owner looked after it.
I'll check all fluid levels, make sure there ok, drive the vehicle and see if the problem still exists.

Reguarding the Engine oil, don't fill it while its running, other wise you will overfill it and do the same amount of damage as running no oil .

Seriously, the engine should be off and still for a bit before checking the levels, where as the auto fluid, engine should be running and auto should be primed (foot on the brake, select drive and reverse for a few seconds, then back into neutral) then checked.

Good luck, sounds like you need to give me the car
