IMO the best std electric winch you can buy is the Hi Mount. If you have the budget swap the 4.6hp for the 6hp from the XP. The reason that this is the best, is not just because its a Warn, it is incredibly quick, both under load and on load. They are probably the most widely used winch in competition

IMO The best low mount winch available is the XP. It is massively powerful, but draws a fair bit of current.

Not sure what Dave means by going to an industrial rigging store as I would be suprised if they have anything suitable atall, and they wont be cheap!

There are problems with the cheap winches. the gear set seem to be generally ok, but they have things like the motor casing pressed into one set of legs so you cant easily swap motors, where-as on a Warn or Superwinch you can pretty much swap the motors around relativley easily.

I originally had an XD9000 on mine, which I then swapped to run XP's front and rear, and after about 3 months swapped the front one for a Hi Mount. I wish now I had done Hi mounts both ends, but thats not really a viable option anymore for me.

I always hear people say 'buy the best one you can afford' in these situations but I dont see the point in paying over inflated prices for things either :mad:

I read that comparo in 4wd Action a while ago and Premier won that, but the premier is only about $300 cheaper than the warn low mount and doesnt have the rep that Warn does. So on that basis I would rather spend the extra dosh and buy a Warn. But at $1700 for the warn, its a decent amount of money to part with :angel:

The Tigerz are getting good reports, but werent included in the comparison article and at $700 (steel cable included) with a 3 year warranty, that seems like a bargain. If it plays up, take it back but that wont help me if I am axle deep in the sticky stuff and on my own in the scrub :(

If you want a real winch and are fair dinkum about giving it a hard time and using it all the time.....then a PTO winch is the go.
PTO winches were fitted to range rovers but would be hard to find.
A pto winch is happy in the elements and water.
A PTO winch normally out lasts the vehicle.
A PTO winch works hour after hour at much higher speed and capacity than any electric winch.
A pt0 winch usually has a bigger cable drum than electric and little in the way of obstructions so the cable lays better and feeds on better.
All heavy duty equiptment use a hydraulic or pto winch.
When was the last time you see a tilt tray truck with a electric winch on the back ?
After saying all that I have not killed my 400 dollar ALDI winch yet.

PTO can be the best option for all the reasons above, but they are just expensive beyond reason.

I am building a PTO system for my 130, and the costs stack up something like this:

PTO adaptor for back of the transfer case: $600
Pump for the PTO: $550
10,000Lb Winch: Superwinch $3,300 or MileMarker $2,400 or Ramsey $2,900
Hoses: $200
Hyd oil tank with alloy fins: $350
Control valve with bypass valve: $350
Hyd oil Filter: $80
20L of Hyd oil: $140

This is why most people fit an electric - the cost.

I have one of the 12,000 lb Tigerz winches.The main reason i bought it
was the price and the warranty.Plus i read a lot of good things about it.
Its been pretty good so far.Its not the fastest winch out there but does
the job in my opinion.And the remote is handy as well.

There just a Thomas winch, can get them around cheaply, they're painfully slow, but the worm gear setup, they'll pull till destruction

I agree with Dave, buy a tirfor and a dozen cans of HTFU... thats what im gona do (the cans that is)

I think that in the case of the RR Classic and how much cost replace it the best option would be just remove the good parts of it and the number plates and with the cost of the winch just go a get another RR :D
