    Air Conditioner compressor - Noisy!

I have 1985 Range Rover and have replaced the air-conditioning compressor twice and it continues to be noisy. Has anybody struck this problem???
It is the upright piston compressor.

sure its not the idler for the belt that drives it or the clutch mech on the compressor?

have you checked the oil in it (complicated process) if you;ve had it regassed?

It is mainly noisy on idle speed and tends to get quieter as revs are increased

    describe the noise?

Im thinking you might have a problem elsewhere in the system.

when its running does the aircon work properly?

Yes - when it runs it runs it is very cool. At idle approx650rpm it sounds like a diesel with a loud knocking noise, klunk >klunk, in the compressor but when it has about 1000rpm it starts to quieten down and then just about disappears at 2000rpm

I would say the small bearing in the pulley (assuming this part isn't replaced along with the pump)....I have changed mine due to noise in the disco I 'm not sure whether they are totally the same though.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

I suppose I must impress on you that this noise is NOISY!!!. It make my V8 which is very quiet at idle sound like I have a very rattly diesel. I mean like KLUNK>Klunk noise!!

Maybe I need to give you fella more info. I have installed two new compressors in the past year and had them gassed up. Each time the compressor is nosiy. At idle it is the compressor is very noisy - like a big end going but when the revs are increased it starts to quieten down. The only thing that we have not replaced is the head and valve assembly which has been reused on each unit but should not make any difference???
It is also very slow to start up when it is turned on but when it runs it runs quite cool.

It might be over gassed or you have a faulty tx valve which is allowing liquid feedback into the compressor.

one compressor wearing out I can sort of buy.

    2?

if it was regassed at one place and then the new compressor was fitted at the same place and gassed they may have the wrong gassing chart and are over filling the system.

fixing noise compressors while not there to here, feel, see is a hard one to help but a knocky york style compressor can make quite a knock if over charged with gas to much oil. some thing in the cylinder of the compressor or blockage with in the aircon pipe works. did the reciever dryer get changed as well. also do the toutch test and see if there are cold spots along the pipe work to see if there are blockages. check the front clutch bearring and see if its real hot espesally if its off the old compressor as they get notchy in sound and can make a good knock type sound before they start to squeal. it would help with what the pressure is in both high and low side ports are.to me if every thing was done properly it has to be compressor. but check pressure readings at idle and then at 1700rpm. its sorts of sounding like over charge may be if every thing was renewed with new parts. do you know what type of gas went in and how mutch.
