    Disabling Airbags

Has anyone modified the power supply to the airbag control unit, (ie put an on/off switch in the power supply) so it can be switched off while any serious 4WDriving is happening. Your thoughts/ideas please.

Have you heard of any going off??? What the reason for your question?

From what I understand the SRS ECU has its own integral power supply capable deploying the airbags for up 45minutes???? i think. So turning off the power won't necessarily achieve much.

From what I have been told, if you have a crash and you didn't need to go to hospital, then the airbags weren't needed and functioned correctly.

It is just a thought I had that in the event of a mishap occurring out in the bush, by way of a crunch of the bullbar which could possibly activate the airbags. Just inviting people to offer thoughts, technical or otherwise.

Airbags covered under our ADR's will only deploy in a pretty serious shunt, and if so, you ARE going to need them to fire.

    I wouldn't go there!

..... if you do "go there" for whatever reason (steering wheel repair etc) by pulling the appropriate fuse, remember to give capacitors in the system time to shed their charge .... maybe 1 hr (to be on the safe side)

I have had some Discos with some pretty big frontal impacts, and none had the bags deploy, and all occupants weren't injured. I would say you are pretty safe offroad, unless you don't have a SRS compatible bar...

55 tonnes of force is required to trigger the bags.

I've clobbered many objects offroad, some hard enough to bruise at the belt.

    But never triggered the bags!

My advice - Leave them alone!

Me too! Copped a pretty good shunt to the bullbar this weekend and it didnt activate te airbags.

I wouldnt be too worried about it. Given mine plenty of bumps without them going off.

I was speaking to a young guy in one of the local 4WD shops recently - chatting about bullbars/airbags etc.
So far he's the only person I've come across that has had one deploy- they hit a horse at 80 k's. I'm not 100% sure now if it was D1 or D2.

If reckon if you hit something that hard offroad the inconvenience of the airbag deploying will be the least of your worries!
