Timing Pin shape 300TDi Auto, Anyone??

Found out today that timing pin hole and shape are different on the Auto 300TDi to the Manual box 300TDi flywheels.
The plug hole is on the vertical surface at the front of the flywheel housing, there is a plate with 2 bolts, one bigger than the other, 10mm and 13mm, the 13mm is a wading type plug, Can't see the pin hole in the flywheel but using a thin wire probe it seems to have a flat surface on one side with a ramp on the other, if anyone knows the shape of the pin that fits the Auto flywheel can you take a pic or do a drawing with dimensions, it would be most appreciated, Thanks, Regards Frank.

AFAIK auto and manual 300tdi SHAFT pins are the same... they just go in the slightly different wading plug spots....

AFAIK also, the TIMING PIN is the method of locking the injector pump drive, I simply used a cut-off 3/6" bolt cut off so that there is no threaded section...

hope I've got the terms right and I hope this helps - Laurie

The diagrams in the W/Shop Manual show the hole as a tapered ramp leading down to a wedge style hole, I turned down a bolt which is threaded through a brass bush threaded into the hole in the vertical part of the flywheel housing.
problem is the pin on the end of the bolt doesn't fit correctly in the hole in the flywheel, which may not be holding it in the correct TDC position, I have a 3/8" (9.5mm) drill shank in the inj. pump hole, I'm just worried the crank may be a degree or so out, that's why it would be good if someone had the specs of the pin in the flywheel, I could make up the pin to fit correctly, Regards Frank.

    OK Frank,

section 12 P 8 of the Rave disco manual shows it

I'm assuming yours is an auto??

The instructions state that you use the larger of the two bolt holes that hold the balnking plate on and insert your crankshaft locking tool there

For the crankshaft locking tool I centre drilled a bolt (wading plug) for a 3/16" drill bit which slides through the said drilled hole into the hole when the crankshaft is exactly TDC

it may help to have someone slowly rotate the crankshaft in it's direction of rotation via the pulley nut to allow you to push the pin into the hole at the right time..

    Laurie

Laurie, it is an auto, it is very hard to be able to see the hole in the flywheel, as in my post above in my L/R W/Shop manual the pin is shown as tapered like the hole in the flywheel is. At present I have a bolt which has the end turned down to 3/16" through a brass bush screwed into the front vertical plate of the flywheel housing, if the hole in the flywheel is tapered on one side (as in the illustration in the W/S manual), then the pin won't be fitting in the hole correctly and may position the TDC mark out a degree or 2, thats why a pic of the hole or the pin would help, Regards Frank.

Frank, I just used the 3/16" drill bit and it was a neat fit - pic sent by email to your bigpond email address- Laurie

edit: the factory tool may be tapered to assist in centreing it and pushing it home
