are D2a diffs the same as a defender and or P38?

Looking at the part numbers from the ARB catalogue they list

    front locker :-
    RD128 Discovery 4/93On 24 spline axles
    RD128 Defender 4/93On 24 spline axles
    RD138 RR 98On

    rear locker :-
    RD138 Discovery 11/02On
RD138 Rear locker Rover Type with Traction Control 02on
    RD138 RR 98On

I suppose im more interested in the defender diffs as i hope they are the same as a D2a

Not sure whether the above info is correct so i thought i would ask you knowledgable lot for any input or confirmation

All Disco2 diffs are regular Rover diffs. The P38 diff is associated with the 4.6V8 which was in the NAS market - we didn't get them.

I checked with Tusker re the TD5 Defender 110 diffs, and his was Rover front (not P38 ) and P38 rear.
    Cheers

    Defender 110, 130, Front 1983-93 Rover type 28.2 (1.11") 10 3.54 RD1271

    Rover type, P38A 31.5 (1.24") 24 3.54 RD138

1 If vehicle was manufactured during 1993, check spline count.
2 Air Locker not available for vehicles equipped with high load option.
3 190102 ring gear spacer required. Longer ring gear bolts (not supplied) are also necessary - (Land Rover part no. 576521).
4 When an RD127 Air Locker is to be installed in Range Rovers manufactured prior to 1980 (approx.), special carrier bearings
(No. K11300/K11162) may also be necessary - Land Rover part no. RTC3426.
5 Some vehicles have crown wheel bolts which cannot be reused and must be replaced. Consult service manual.
6 P38A is most commonly found in traction control equipped vehicles. Identify P38A type diff by large 205mm [8.07"] flange diameter.
P38A was not used on North American delivered Discoverys - use RD128.

    To make things confusing.....

I'm 99% certain all Aus spec D2's are Rover front and rear and that there were none delivered with P38 rear diffs. The ARB catalogue has had that printed for years.

I'm with you there Simon, I believe the only d2's that had those were the 4.6 ones supplied in the US

Pete i think ARB says that the NAS discos (even the 4.6)use the RD128 in the rear. the US had never heard of the RD138 that ARB rec for AU discos

does anyone know what i need to measure to see if this makes sense?

On an exploded view of the RD138 I have from ARB it mentions the above and also:-

*For the Rover type with a flange diameter of 174mm (6.95") refer to RD128*
