LT230 - Gaskets vs RTV Sealant

    Gday,

Just going through the RAVE cd about the LT230 Overhaul and its outlined that from the 28F boxes they stopped using gaskets and replaced them with Hydrosil RTV Sealant.
Just curious as to why they would have done this, because surely the gaskets would be better than the sealant? Or not?

    Regards

Definetley to limit the amount of leaks. The sealant would be better than the gaskets in my opinion.

lots of stuff has sealant on mine.

I used sealant on the O-rings on the intermediate shaft too.

    What sealant is best?
Anyone know of any online retailers that might sell it along with threadlocker?

Silicone sealants are MUCH better than gaskets.

Land Rover also deleted the sump gasket in favour of silicone. When I have rebuilt components on my IIA and 110 I have deleted gaskets where possible (unless they are needed for spacing or they seal things that would react with silicone).

RTV, HYLOMAR blue, or silastic will all work fine. Or sikaflex if you never want to take it apart again...

If you do want to take it apart easily in future, lightly oil one side.

I had a conversation about a year ago with the guys at Award Diff and Gearbox in Sydney who rebuild a lot of LT230s, manual gearboxes and diffs including for the L/R dealers. Apparently not all the sealants are suitable and some can give off fumes internally that can corrode the gears following assembly. Can't recall the details of what to avoid and what works best but someone on here will know?

    regards
