I am looking at trading my 99 TDI cab/chassis on abrand newie. Any feedback on the Transit motor? Used to hear some fairly horrible things about Ford Transits, but think it mainly related to the running gear - and it's quite a while ago.

There has been quite a bit of discussion here on this engine, and a search should find it - look for "puma". My impression is that the major problems that have been identified have been an obscure ecu programming fault that can cause engine knocking in some circumstances, and, shared with most or all other unit injector diesels, a sensitivity to contaminated fuel that can result in repair bills easily running into five figures that will not be covered by warranty. (to maintain warranty coverage virtually the whole system must be replaced!)
Apart from these points the engine seems to have few problems, and the owners are generally happy with the performance. Worth noting that the height of the engine means it is set lower in the chassis, making the handbrake slightly more vulnerable to damage. Early models could have the front prop shaft hit the sump in extreme articulation, but I understand this has been corrected with a new sump.

A mate of mine has a transit and has had no trouble with the motor at all,it was even filled with unleaded without damage.I am looking at buying one next year. Pat
Simply put awesome!
We got ours October 2007 and have not had any major drama's the dealership have been great to us and have looked after any small issues very well.
The engine it self feels and performs great, we have had a TD5 defender before and I think the power plant (I am including the six speed gear box) out performs a "standard" (non chipped) TD5 plant.
We kust finished a 7,300km round trip to the Cape and it didn't miss a beat the whole time.
I'd confidently hop in this car and drive to Perth tomorrow
Do it!
Cheers,
Defender "Transit".
Now that is gold!![]()

Look in the for sale section...... I have a brand new Puma Engine for sale complete with 6 speed gearbox, turbo, loom etc.

With the handbrake drum - I ordered a batch of bash plates for folks here on the forum - available from Devon 4X4; these plates sort the issue. The brake drum is marginally lower than the TD5's, but the more protection the better.
It does appear to be pot luck as to if you get a "good one" or a problematic one though. Mine has been fine - others seem to have many issues.
And as for the "search for Puma - good luck" type comments - really, there are plenty of threads around with issues affecting other Defender models too! (Oil in loom etc) At least no one can say it's not a LR! I agree with what John said above. I've already driven mine around Australia and over major remote deserts. This trip taught me what to look out for - hoses rubbing, parts that can/will fail - so now, I too am confident that the Puma will do it again without issue (cos now I have all the issues sorted!)
