    Vacuum Pump Problem

    Gday

Been working on the old mans Defender today.

For a while it's had crap brakes, I thought maybe just bleed them and they'll come right. So bled them up. No difference. While doing that we noticed the rear calipers were weaping a fair amount of brake fluid, so I ordered 2 rebuild kits. They went in today.

    Still no difference

But then I noticed they didn't feel right. I had a thought and took it for a spin down the drive. Drive along, brakes are bad, switch engine off, brakes the same Breakthrough

Then when sitting with the engine running, I pumped the brake pedal and I could feel them getting harder and harder then if you hold it on you can feel the pedal going down.

Now it was dark by then so I didn't have much of a look, but whats wrong?

Is the pump itself buggered? Is an airline leaking?

    Is this a common problem?

    Thanks

That doesn't sound like a vacuum prob to me. More like brake fluid leakage. If you aren't loosing any, then it is probably internat leakage in the master cylinder

These Tdi Defenders also develop splits at the booster where the Mcyl bolts on, causing a vac leak. The sinking pedal as mentioned could be a fluid leak or bypass inside the Mcyl. Needs further investigation

Had a look today and theres a split in the metal where the master cylinder bolts on, gave it a bit of a press and I could hear air getting sucked in

So I'll be on the lookout for one of them

You don't have a spare one knocking about anywhere down there do you JC?
