I think the biggest problem with heavy fuel use is the EFI system, if you want an improvement in fuel consumption I would be looking at a Haltech (type) chip and some dyno tuning, have a chat to Graham Coopers in St. Peters, Sydney, Regards Frank.

You could swap in a Rollmaster timing gears set aligned at the 2 degrees advance keyway, then advance your distributor to around 10 degrees at idle. More torque and slightly better economy.

The 14CUX is quite basic but also can be improved. New generation 4 hole injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a custom Tornado Systems chip will all help.

A lot of 3.9s are by now suffering from worn camshafts which will adversely affect economy (and performance). But any 2+ ton 4x4 with a V8 will not return brilliant mpg especially in urban driving.

Agree, if you're thinking of new valve train I'd go with a duplex chain with adjustable keyway - not much more cost than standard and at least half the price of a full vernier gear
