EMS1/EMS2 vs TM2 (Engine Watchdog) combo

I've just bought a TM2 Combo from Davy to monitor temperature and coolant level for my 1995 110 (Tdi 300). I'm yet to fit it, and just noticed the EMS units from Madman (Home Page). Whilst a bit more expensive, the EMS units monitor more things, and perhaps look like they would mount a little nicer in a dashpod.

So... what would you people prefer?

I plan to fit two or three, EMS units in my rangie (I have a few outputs and multiple pyrometers that I want to monitor). But I am not at that stage yet.

I have an EMS2. They are a versatile little unit allowing you to set high and low limits that trigger alarms.

My only gripe is that the screen is difficult to read in full sunlight.

I have the EMS1, it works well, unlike the EMS2 it is very easy to read, it has already warned me of low coolent level and low voltage, so I know this part of it works.

My only comment on these is they are very sensitive to a dirty earth.

Can't comment on whether they are better or not compared to the TM2.

I'd go for the EMS1 but that may be because I sell them... lol. They do have a better display. The ems2 is smaller and the Toyota guys can stick them in one of the air vents, so that works pretty nice. In the disco or defender I'd go with the ems1. If $$ is an issue, you can build the unit up, the base unit has a built in coolant level detector and with one VDO temp sender you can monitor the engine block temp this will only set you back around $300. The full kit gives you great visibility on you engine and it’s components at around $500 depending on your options like Boost pressure. Below in short is what the EMS can monitor.

    • Out of the box:
    • Battery voltage with high and low alarm
    • Engine running hours with service timer
    • Inclinometer and artificial horizon
    • Oil pressure loss warning (from OEM oil pressure switch)
    • Coolant level alarm
    • Ambient temperature (via unused EGT wires)
    • Options:
    • Oil Temp
    • Coolant Temp
    • EGT temp
    • Oil or Boost pressure
    • Hey you can even regulate your Fan via the EMS!!!

    Not bad hey!

If you anly want a coolant level detector, The CLD will only set you back $55.

look at http://www.nata.net.au for Ausie prices. ps. AULRO members get special prices!

    Newer to late mate!
Further to all this, another great thing is that you can actually see the temperature rise and fall as you drive, best one is the EGT when you climb a big hill and it shoots up or when driving on the beach you can find a gear and speed to keep the engine nice and cool.

When I start in the morning I know exactly when the engine is up to it’s running temp at around 86 degrees.

The EMS is not just and engine monitoring alarm it can actually help you drive your car better!

Have an EMS 2 fitted to my 300 tdi and everything the entertainer says is true. Got the EMS 2 as it fitted perfectly in the blank for the electric mirrors in my Rangie I have no trouble reading it in any light. Like Red Back says though the earth is very sensitive.

How do the EMS1 and EMS2 compare in price.

I'm torn - the larger display of the -1 sounds good for my crap eyesight but the tidinessof being able to mount the -2 in my mudpod or mud console (and therefore have the wires hidden away) sounds pretty damn uiseful.

Anyone have either type of EMS mounted in a MUD pod above the dash in their Defedner ?
