Hi there, just wondering if someone would be kind enough to give me a quik education on what the tyre measurements etc on side wall mean.
I undersatand as the following.
265 70 R16
265 is 265mm measurement of the total width of tyre.
70 means that the wall height is 70% of the tyre width.
R16, is the rim size.
does this mean i cannot run 265 70 r16 and 235 70 r16 together as the wall heights will be different?
how do you convert to inches eg 265 70 R16 i beleive to be close to 31's??
any confirmation would be helpful
cheers

This site explains all about the tyre markings and a lot more:

regards
1 inch is about 25mm so 265= 10.5 inches roughly and the 70 means 7.25 in. height tread to bead x 2 + rim16=30.5 in tyre dia. at a rough calc off the top off my head.
total diameter of tyre is 2 wall hieghts plus the hole in the middle normaly filled by the wheel.
265mm divided by 25.4mm will give you inches of tyre width =10.43"
wall height is in your case 70% of the 10.43 = 7.303
2 x 7.303 + 16( wheel size) = 30.6"
as frantic said 10.5 x 31 is close enough for government work
Found this to be good
