    Winch Cable - Hard or Soft Eye

    The winch cable on my 101 has a single swage fitting on the end that is commonly available. It is of a small size to allow the cable end to be fed either out the front or out the rear. The 101 PTO winch is mid mounted and designed to pull from either the front or rear as required.

    My cable does not have swage fitting and had a bastardised system that I would not trust. As I cannot find a suitable swage I asked a wire rope company to put in an eye to which the winch hook can be fitted. The wire rope specialist indicated that a hard eye was required as a soft eye would weaken the wire rope where the hook joins. I now have a hard eye but if I have to move the cable to the rear I have to remove the cable completely and re-install from the rear.

    Since I have had this work done and have had a look at winches on cars in car parks - mainly Warns. The majority of cables have soft eyes which according to the wire rope expert will weaken the cable where the hook joins.

    What is the general view? Hard eye or soft eye? A soft eye if suitable will solve my problems.

    hard eye.

    for the reasons the cable company suggested.

    they come in various sizes and you should be able to get one that will let you re-reeve without pulling the winch apart.

    the busmaster solved this problem by making the fairleads removable.

    I have the smallest hard eye for the size wire and it is still too large to fit down the fairlead hole noting that the fairlead on a 101 winch is different to a typical electric or pto front mount winch.

    The fairlead has a tube that can turn inside a tube mounted on the body. At the end of the rotating tube are two pulleys through which the wire runs - this allows the pull to be at any angle and at very tight angles. The problem is that the inside diameter of the tube is much less than the smallest allowable hard eye. The standard swage fitting is not much greater in diameter than the wire and fits down the eye.

    I am surprised that most Warn winch setups did not have a hard eye but a soft eye (which would fit down the hole.

    hang about....

    from memory (and this is haaaazey) doesnt one part of the fairlead setup come apart and pull back with the winch rope so that when you re-route it you take that part with the rope and secure it into the other fairlead?

    Look at
    Wire rope sockets.
    Closed and open spelter
    5/6...3/8 closed item looks good.
    Should work with 9mm rope as all you have to do is to stop the rope pulling though the hole.
    I think that is normally done with a wedge arrangement, but could be done with a swage inside the spelter.
    The smaller 5/16 one could be used and just drill out the hole inside it slighty for 9mm rope.

    Thanks Ron - haven't looked overseas yet - I just want to get my winch going at this stage - I found plenty of 9mm swages but they are about 50mm across where the the hole is about 38mm if I remember correctly.

    I cannot find a swage like you have on your cable here in Aust.

    Dave - the pulleys in the fairlead unbolt but the there is still a hole about 38mm in diameter that the cable has to fit through.

    I was going to post this up earlier but it is a bit of work in knocking out the wedge to get it to release.
    I know the army used this sort of gear a fair bit.

    they're actually really easy to get apart.

    I can get the 20t ones apart one handed. (apart from the safety clamp)
