    Defer 90 street car?

    Hello brains trust

A bloke i know rang me wanting to know if it would be possible to lower a defer 90 to make it more 'car like', I know I can hear the howls of laughter but bear with me....

He likes the defer 90 look, the utilitarian styling but is not that keen on high 4WD in the city. The 4WD ability is wanted but not to the same degree as a standard defer. Basicaly he wants a defer 90 that is the size of a car, with car wheels

With that being said how would you (with enough coin) go about doing this?

I am thinking airbag suspension like D3 so it cane be lowered but with 'car' wheels? This would mean gearing changes would it not?

Thanks people, I know it is not overly Landroverly like but it would be an interesting project though.

Thanks in advanace, look foward to seeing some suggestions.

    Cheers

    Ben

Lots of people have done it in the UK

Lowered coils springs, or airbags, even 18" D2 wheels with adaptors, and road tyres. ARB upgrades, brake upgrades etc etc

They actually handle very well on decent rubber with decent damping and spring rates

Adapters are not legal in Qld unless fitted by the manufacturer. There is a thread (or 2) on this subject if you do a search. Also make sure any "car" wheels you plan to fit clear suspension and brake components. HTH

Everyone knows what happens when one jacks their landrover products up 2 inches with tyres bigger than 205/80r16 - why not 2 inches lower with custom springs and smaller tyres ( say 205/65r16 from a falcon?)

Fitting Disco transfer case gearing and a set of 18's with 255 55 18. (29"), would bring the gearing inline with a Disco.

    -2 firmer springs and shocks.

Swapping the Stud pattern to a D2/generic 5 stud style pattern would allow for a much larger range of wheels.

How much will a 90 lower? I would have thought that you'd be pretty close to the front bumpstops with only 50mm - and that would produce a fairly harsh ride with that sort of clearance.

If the 90 was to run -2 or even 1.5 springs and the shocks. The shocks will have a shorter closed lenght so you could run smaller bump stops. Just an idea

SWB Series Land Rovers came out with an option of 6.00x16 wheels instead of 7.50x16.

That in itself may be enough to make acceptable. Basically a 90 with standard Range Rover Classic wheels & tyres.

I think if you wanted it lower and money was no issue, then fit airbag suspension, but retain the original size wheels. That way you get the full flexibility of having a lowered car, but also having it's full potential on tap when required. It's probably not that expensive an option by the time you factor in new wheels, springs and shocks for a "lowered" landy.

The air suspension would also help with NVH as there would be more insulation between the parts hitting the road (wheels & axle) and the chassis / body. Though I suspect after awhile the said person would discover the benefits of a standard height Land Rover, and only bother lowering it for access / egress and low car parks.

So did 90's and they still do. (well 205 r16's - one of the available sizes)
