    R380 & LT230 breathers????

    Hi All

Just poking around under the Defender on the weekend (installed extended F/R diff breathers) and noticed that my gearbox does not have a breather.

The truck is a 1998 130 with a 300 Tdi. The gearbox and transfer case were just recently reconditioned.

I had a look in the book and it shows a breather barb on top of the R380, but when I have a feel around on top of the box, I think I can feel a blanking plug.

Should there be a breather barb that I can attach a hose?

Also, should the LT230 have a breather?

    Cheers

It's likely the breather banjo bolts were just threaded down to block the holes for transport.
You should fit the breathers back on before they decide to breathe through the oil seals.

Have a look near the linkages - the LT230 breather is near the hi/lo and the R380 breather is on the side not far away - W/shop manual, Gearbox pt 37, page 5 has a diagram that shows where they are. (Even though the side cutaway of the R380 shows a breather pipe out the top)

great thanks...can see in the manual now. I was looking at the first picture in section 51 which showed the breather out the top of the gearbox.

I'll get under the truck tonight and have a look.

    Cheers

On my disco R380, the banjo fitting for the breather screws into the right side of the aluminium extension housing (for 5th and reverse gears), near the forward end, high up, underneath the linkage that goes to transfer case (high/low shift). AFAIK this linkage is different on a Defender so may not be under, but probably will be close.

    as mentioned on the top.

in the deefers you can get to both (just) by pulling the rubber cover off of the gearbox tunnel

Had a look last night. I removed the rubber gear boot but was unable to located the breathers. After fumbling around underneath and pinching a nerve in my neck, I located the little suckers.

It looks like the banjo is there but no hose connected.

Might have to remove the tunnel from inside to get to them

    Cheers
