Niether have a cooler in the radiator apart from engine oil cooler element.

I was thinking more V8 disco rad as it's wider with a front mounted intercooler,as long as the I/C pipes had room. Pat

Bit TOO wide Pat, unfortunately as that'll sure keep the Tdi cool

An early RRC rad is narrower slightly, maybe close enough but I haven't measured it up.
Both Defenders I have fitted with 4 BD1t's have County V8 rads, A/C condensers and full front mount IC's, IC pipes I routed behind headlamps and into side of IC.

    Hi Pat,

Wish I'd known that when I did my "pre-emptive" at JC's a few months ago. So, what involved with "headwork" on a 300Tdi? Just matching up the head and manifold ports or substantial reshaping/enlarging?

What advantage does the re-worked turbo give? Better spool-up at low rpm? The standard give full boost from just under 2000 rpm and I'm already running 18 psi.

Also, what's the go with changing the big-end bearings? What form does the "weakness" take? Big-end knock, low oil pressure or something more spectacular/catastrophic?!

    Thanks,
    Ian

Fit the biggest cooler you can. My cooler is a seperate unit. I actually have 2. One is oil to engine coolant and then the normal air cooled one with it's own fan.
If you do it correctly heat won't be to bad but as said earlier I did have a lot of issues over cooling before. Found all the idiot mistakes now and it runs very cool.
I do run transmax Z over your standard auto oil due to the earlier heat problems.
They are a great mod if all is working and make towing a breaze.

With the transfer you want the disco high range and the Defender low range or super low like in mine. Mine is even to slow down hill ofroad in low first! I have to use power not brakes like most other auto's I have seen.

Im thinking of a straight changeover from disco to defender 300tdi and transmission onto fender transfer, so you recommend additional cooling for transmission oil? probably larger intercooler, exhaust and tweaked fuel pump. I want to have a good plan before doing it.

Defender and disco low range should be the same. Just like all LT230's.
