You may need to modify/install new mounts rather than modify the seat brackets. When I installed replacement seats in QLD a few years back, I was told that no cutting/welding/modification to the seat brackets allowed. I had to keep the brackets original (or looking original ;)) and modify the seat box. They required 75x75x3mm steel plates with rounded corners (basically big square washers) under each mount point. All fixings must be class 8.8 metric or higher. To make my life easier I welded the nuts to the steel plates and riveted them to the underside of the seat box to make them captive.

So yes, all should be possible, but will need engineering. If the seat belts are attached to the seat as it seems in the pics then the engineer may be more stringent.

NFI on the airbags, sorry.

If it is a pre 97 Disco then you can remove the seat box but if it is a 97 onwards Disco then the seat base is part of the floorpan and the belts are also attached to the seat.

I intend to do as you say and make a newpair of seat boxs for my 94 Disco to fit my XR6 seats but have yet to get around to it.

baz I actually find the seats in the defender quite comfortable, no need to change them:D.........

dullbird, to my knowledge the airbag/side air bag thing in the seats would need a trigger ie, the car thay came out off would have been wired up to crumple zones with triggers to set the airbags off, when you fit them to your car they would not be connected to these trigger even if you use the electrical seat adjustments.

Yeah mate can appreciate that but would rather remove something that is never going to get used especially with an explosive in it.

G'day,
My under standing of the side air bags, as an ex SES road rescue member.
For the air bag to deploy it would require an electrical input.
All the SRS(suplimentry restrant systems) wires are covered in a YELLOW sleave to identify them. Do not ever use these as a power source.
Under the seat there should be two looms, one for the seat controls and one for the SRS(Yellow sleave).
Triger info is feed to a ECU usually under the centre console which then sends a electrical paulse to the air bag required, if it's not needed it dosn't "go off".
SRS is often refered to as air bags, but also includes seat belt pretensioners.

Does your disco have pretensioners? My d2 does but I don't know which run yours is( I could serch but hey, it's Sat and I'm in lazy mode).
I would be happy to use them as they are subject to the seat belt pretensioner(the new seat is possibly fitted with them).
A motor trimer could strip the cover off to remove the bag itself and you'd have to pack the void with foam before refitting cover.

Note to outhers.. if you fit an after market seat cover to one of these seats make sure it's air bag compatible.
You don't want it feeding across your back between the cover and the seat in an accident pushing you into the dash:eek:

I'm pretty sur emine doesn't have pretensioners....mines a D1 and of the year that airbags could be optioned not factory...So i'm guessing not even though I have both airbags in mine.

as for the airbag and motor trimmers...the side airbag has what looks like an access panel so (although we haven't attempted to take it off) we think you may be able to access the airbag without ripping the seat apart to get to it.
