    R380 and LT230 shims...where can I get'em

    Hi all,

This might seem like a dumb question, but I'm having trouble finding an answer.

I am rebuilding my G/Box and T/Case and need a supply of shims. Have emailed several LR specialists (even one in UK who told me I'd be better off getting them local and didn't even give offer me a price).

Of the one local that responded, could not supply all I needed and some were fairly pricey ($32 for 1 shim in one case). So I'd like some more options.

Must be that these boxes are so good that nobodys' rebuilding them and shims are in short supply!!!

Any tips would be much appreciated.

My box rebuilds stalled for the same reason. The hardest thing is that for a lot of the clearances you need a handful with some either side of what you think will be needed.

I've even contacted a couple of specialist workshops here to see if I could dip into their shim libraries but they don't generally keep them in stock! I'd be more than happy to pay double what they want for one as long as I could borrow a handful for go/no-go testing.

You can always buy some shim material and make your own like they did in the old days. It is available in steel or brass and only requires a template and a pair of sharp snips (and a bit of time).

Thanks MacMan I know exactly what you mean. One specialist tranny shop said he'd been collecting shims out of trashed diffs and boxes for 30 years and he uses these for his builds for ones he can't buy and wasn't going to part with anything. Can't say I blame him, after all that's what feeds his family. Said could go "shim in a can" but that's exy too and the shims in these boxes are really spacers at 2 - 4mm. and about square in section. Don't like the idea of packing out a thrust washer that has turning surfaces either side with a 1thou shim that's only about 3mm deep.

Check out roverparts.com.au - I think they have a lot of shims and thrust washers, etc which are too the sizes required. I havent bought anything from them as yet but will be soon...

Ashcrofts may be able to offer some advice ?

I haven't seen the shims so I don't know if they have a coating of some sort, but if not then you could buy one each of the thickest shim and skim them to size with a surface grinder.

Please keep us posted, I am not far from beginning my own R380 rebuild. BTW, where did you get your bearing kit ?
