    Transmission warning light came on

Luckily this is not the start of a horror story.

After 2 short, but over the bonnet, water crossings and 6 Km down a hard corrugated track the red transmission temp light came on. Now it will not go off.

Leave the Disco over night and when I start her in the morning there is the light.

I'm guessing a loose or wet connection, but where?

One would guess the transmission oil temp sensor.
On my Classic 3.9 it is in the cooler pipe behind the lower left of the radiator.
    It also happened to me.

Well the rubber cover did a good job of trapping the water.
Pulled it off, sprayed WD40 everywhere left it a while wiped it all dry, put the connectors back onto the sensor and still have the red light on the dash

Does this mean the sensor is knackered?

Why can I not find this sensor in the Haynes manual or Rave?

Bugger, it was all going so well

Can I just screw out the old sensor and screw a new one in, or do I have to drain the oil and remove pipes?

It is a "wet" sensor but with mine I stuck my tongue out and unscrewed it preparing to stick my thumb over it, but only a thimblefull of fluid ( if that) came out.
So if my experience is common, no you do not have to drain anything.

Yeah that rubber cover is good at collecting water!!

I'm with Philip, can't remember how much fluid I lost but was easy enough to do without draining/removing anything!!

If its a D2 then there's an unused (normally) set of connectors on the same circuit that are tucked away above the left side of the transfer case/gbox for the TC over-temperature sensor used on V8's.

    Thanks for that.

All done. No oil loss, just $70 for sensor and gasket.

I'll just have to remember to check the rubber cover after deep crossings in the future
