    Disco 2 TD5 Fuel Economy

    Hi All,

Quick question hopefully a fellow td5 owner can clear up on the economy of the disco 2 2003.

I am currently towing a pop-top camper (1.5ton zpprox) and am pushing to get 550km's out of my 95 litre tank. I have heard that the TD5 is fairly efficient but 17l/100km's doesn't seem all that good. I have the upgrade chip and EGR Valve bypass. Is this about the economy I should expect?

    Thanks all,

    Holmesy

17/100 does seem a tad high, but not uncommon, it will depend on how hilly the terrain is, as well as the speed your cruising at.

14l to 15l/100 is the norm, we have been getting around the 12 to 13l/100 just by dropping the cruising speed by 10k, I now cruise at 100 to 105kph in 110 zones and 90 to 95kph in 100 zones.

Hope you have an EGT monitor with that chip, you will be amazed at how your EGTs will increase with a chip, high EGTs will kill the fuel economy too.

    My camper is 1.3t approx.

    Cheers Baz.

    Hey Holmesy.
At least you are getting BETTER economy than a V8,and if your chip is anything like mine,BETTER HP than a V8
As Redback sugests, dont work the chipped motor as hard.If its a manual, use 4th more or sooner under load,if an auto experiment with manualy shifting down under load.
Revs may be higher BUT the mojo is doing the job easier=burning less juice.
    PS CHECK YOUR AIR FILTER!!!!

And maybe add in an intercooler upgrade if not already done.

    Thanks guys,

The disco is Auto and I cruise at about 95kph with revs sitting on 2000, the last terrain was all flat, air filter regularly cleaned (forgot to mention I have a snorkel too). What does the EGT monitor and intercooler upgrade do?

    Cheers,

    Holmesy

    Exhaust Gas Temperature Monitor.

A larger intercooler cools the air entering the engine thus making it more dense (more oxygen). So more power and lower temps.

D2a (auto only?) came with a bigger I/c this may be a cheaper option then buying a custom upgrade.

makes me happy knowing i am getting around 11l/100km from a recent 4000km trip towing the camper.
mine is manual and still almost stock tyre size which would put your figures out i am sure if running bigger rubber like redback.
not sure where your problem could be otherwise.

    cheers

My dad has the same vehicle in standard form and towing a camper trailer he was getting an average of 13l /100 Km.
Sometimes the fuel consumption was lousy but it averages out Ok

Cost you more $$$ to get better fuel economy

Your fuel economy whilst towing is similar to what I was getting when towing.

You are towing a decent van around with a small engine so its going to be working hard. If you want better exonomy - don't waist money on all these upgrades - just get a better car for towing
