removing swivel pins on 300 Tdi Defender
Does anyone have any tips for removing swivel pins on a 300 Tdi Defender? There's a tab on it that locks into the mudshield so it's difficult with that in place. Also the brake lines are in the way. I suppose it's designed so that you need to remove the whole hub assembly for inspection and overhaul without just loading up the bearings. But I just want to remove a shim to adjust pre-load a bit. I managed to do one side but only by bending back the tab on the mudshield and that seems a bit dodgy.

Just bend the brackets out of the way to undo them, put a jack under the bottom pin or the swivel will unseat. Pat

Goodo, thanks Pat. I did bend it out of the way on the side that I've done but it didn't quite seem like the right thing to be doing. I didn't put a jack under the bottom pin though. But the top pin seemed to go back in OK. Will it be alright?

Mate it just keeps everything in the same spot and stops the oil leaking out.It will be fine but it's better doing it with a jack.Beats me why they make things like that, they know full well it's goner have to come off someday. Pat

Thanks for the replies Pat. There seems to be a mixture of oil and grease in there. I just topped it up with oil. Some day ( in the near future) when I replace the swivel bearings it'll get the one-shot grease, as I believe it's supposed to have. I can't be bothered stripping it all down just yet, just hoping to tighten things up a bit (steering's a bit sloppy).

Don't worry about the grease, there wouldn't be an LR,or any other live axle 4wd for that matter that hasn't got all the different fluids mixed up together throughout the diff. Pat
