    Question HELP! D2 handbrake question...

In my copy of RAVE it states that when dismantling the handbrake, one must remove the "Abutment Plate Retaining Spring". Does this spring pull the abutment plate against the back plate? Or is it just the spring linking the tops of the pad backings together above the abutment plate.

The abutment plate I presume is the plate that hols the top halves of the pads backings apart.

I am dismantling the brake as it has been making some odd noises...

There was no sign of a "retaining spring" on my vehicle - is it a deleted part in my old version of RAVE or has some dopey bugger at LR failed to put it back on?

i would say some dopey bugger at LR forgot to put it back in

i did mine about a year ago and when putting it back together those little springs that lock in are a pain in the butt i think there is a special tool to make it easier but if you dont have it ,it is a 2 man job

Yeah I know! I got them back, the right hand one was the worst where you cant hold the pin in place from behind. I shoved some rags between the case and back plate to hold the pin in place whilst putting the "washer" and spring back holding the "washer" in vice grips. For those who are wondering, you had to be there to understand!
So the abutment plate retaining spring does exist?

An anti-rattle spring was deleted some time in the 2000 model run, and from the diagram in the WSM it would be the one securing the abutment lever ot the backing plate. The spring was deleted as it prevented the shoes from centering properly, which in practice caused the brake to feel as though it was properly applied, then would release by itself with a little forward movement on the vehicle, such as that generated by a TD5 engine idling.
My 1999 D2 broke free twice with my wife outside closing a gate, sustaining significant vehicle damage and great concern to my wife who twice smashed-up the new vehicle, even trying to get back in the 1st time. LR were adamant that the brake was OK but RAVE shows a 2000 service bulletin advising the spring to be removed.

Edit. I've just remembered that it doesn't exist on my MY03 D2, which I discovered the day I got the vehicle home when I removed the drum to plug the holes that allow dirt ingress.

    Cheers mate!

Great work I must say! Well, there's one spring I WONT be putting in!

I've cleaned out the drum and apart from something wrong elsewhere, can't find what the problem I have is.

At exactly 2250 RPM I hear a rattle from the handbrake drum when under slight load. The rattle has the same frequency no matter what the speed, even with left foot braking. With the handbrake on very slightly it vanishes...
It also vanished when the vehicle is hot.

Maybe it's my stuffed exhaust but why would the hand brake application have such a profound effect on it? And it has that same "tingaling" and the drum does when tapped.

All looked fine under the drum and on dismantling. Yet to test run it now it's re-assembled.
