The flashable ecu is not an upgrade as such, sure it is much smoother and much easier to upgrade, but from factory it still has the same power figures as a non-flashable ecu.

Just to muddy the waters James.
Your mates D2 is on the cusp of the non flashable/flashable ECUs.
Either way go the flashable ECU,just done mine.IE non flashable ECU upgraded to flashable ECU with a tuned ECU.WOW SHE FLYS:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Keep the old non flashable ECU as a spare:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Hi We have a 1999 d2 TD5 and had a chip fitted a few months ago fo around $500 by TRS. We noticed a better response especialy towing a caravan it pulled much better on the hills . Cheers George & Pauline

I Know about the flashable, non-flashable ecu's... but people are talking about 'chipping'...
For the sake of clarity and for those that dont know...
1) if you have a flashable ecu then you should be getting the ecu "RE-MAPPED" - i.e. a software upgrade - no chips involved.
2) if you have a non-flashable ecu you have 3 options:
i) replace your non-flashable with a flashable and re-program the security and injector info etc and put on the same fuel mapping as in 1) above.
ii) simply get a plugin box and piggy back that onto the ecu / injector harness. i.e. Tunit box.
iii) If you can afford to keep the car off the road for a while, remove the ecu and have the non-flashable chip removed and replaced with a flashable unit. That way you keep the original ecu and get the software upgrade.
Im assuming that there are people here in Oz that can do option iii)?? If not speak to Pete at www.bellautoservices.co.uk - he can do it via post.

I've passed this information on, thanks. They did mention that they got vehicle as an end of model run out and they suspect it's therefore a 2 not a 2a. The vehicle is not stored where they are walking past it all the time hence they haven't had the opportunity to pop the bonnet and end all conjecture, but they will eventually.
As I said i think it's a new flashable unit followed by remapping that is required. As LandyAndy explained the old ECU can be kept as a spare, they'll like that idea as it is going through the process of morphing from Granny's car to outback expedition vehicle.
