    Chipping an early 02 D2

    Hi All

A mate has taken over a low milage D2 TD5 auto from his elderly mum. It's the model without the CDL.

Anyway he's considering chipping it. Am I right in thinking that while there will be an advantage in fuel economy, it's performance that really benefits.

How much would a chip for one of these older TD5s set him back? Am I asking how long is a piece of string? I'm a humble Tdi driver ( and so is he) so have no idea. Is there a whole range of different chips he is meant to choose intelligently from?

    cheers

Yep you're right, everything will be improved but performance will be the biggest gain.
Economy is already pretty good on the Td5, so improvements will be smaller, but still quite noticeable I believe.

Improving the intercooler would also be a good idea if chipping to get the most from it.

The updated D2a has a bigger intercooler than the early D2s, so that's probably the cheapest and easiest option.
I can't confirm if they are a straight swap, but I think they may be?

Thanks for that. He is not keen to spend a lot of coin and swapping bits that aren't worn out in getting a rocket ship but will look at an ECU swap to make a better job of the engine when she is loaded an going up hills, overtaking in the country etc.

I'm not sure if Tombie does the early ECU models, TRSpares in SA do a chip for the early D2s, not sure of the price though.

I have a BDavis chip in mine and with 32s, bar and winch, roof racks with awning, pole carrier, hilift jack and shovel up there and full drawer system, I still get 10l/100k, 12l to 15l/100 towing a 1.4t camper trailer.

Some of the 2002 Td5s have the flashable ECU. Not sure when it changed, mine is a March 02 build with the EGR cooler at the front of the engine (EU3 engine) and has the flashable ECU and no CDL.

Very late 01 build date is when it changed

The later flashable ECU EGR Cooler model, is available from LandRover for $675, very cheap.
    Cheers Baz.

    Hi Guys

    Thanks for all this information.

Sorry to be slow on the uptake (I have a 300tdi brain) but are you saying they swapped over to flashable ECU in the late 01 builds and if this vehicle has this later flashable unit then getting it upgraded is quite feasible and indeed Landrover sell an upgrade for $675?

If this is correct are there other after market upgrades available from other suppliers that may be superior to the LR product?

    thanks again

    J
