Question TD5 water pump - odd

On dismantling the water pump on my TD5 due to failed shaft seals, I found that the after-market pump I had put in about 2 years ago had broken or worn off one of it's drive lugs , whilst the other was worn too. What the heck would do this ? I can only think that the bearing was momentarily failing, or preloaded too much somehow. Weird, and I don't want my new one to fail too!

I was told to go genuine only on replacement.
    Perhaps this is why

    Good luck, Cheers.
