Imagined performance improvement tightening lift pump bulb screw?
I have had a problem that from take off my 300Tdi was taking a while to build revs.
Knowing that the 300Tdi is no speed demon I have mainly just ignored this slow take off.
When replacing my brake vacuum pump (a tedious job) I noticed that when bumping the fuel lines under the filter canister the lift pump bulb moved slightly. So tightened up this screw 1 1/2 turns.
I have also noticed that some lift pumps do not have this screw on top but seem to be a sealed unit. Is this an older style lift pump?
When driving now it seems to get the revs up quicker than before.
Am I just imagining things?

Minor air leaks could happen, and under suction some air could be pulled into the fuel line and impede performance.
Everything tends to loosen up in the engine bay of a tdi.
As to the design of the lift pump - just the small difference between Disco and Defender, although they swap over, the defender version (yours) has an extra filter in it for rough operating conditions. It seems that the defender version is easier to obtain in Australia from aftermarket parts retailers - as to whether or not it's better is a long argument.
