    Misfiring in cold

    Hi,

This is my fist time posting here and i'd like to thank you for all the info provided in this forum. I'm from Portugal so, sorry my english..

    1- Here's my problem,

I have a 1999 Def 90 Td5 with 305.000km runned by me since new and i've never had any engine issue until now.
In fact, my 90 started to misfire (intermitent loss off power) about two months ago in low revs and JUST or MAINLY in cold (first start of the day or after been stoped for a few hours) witch it tend to disapear after a few minutes runing. In hot, the issue is almost imperceptible... It starts well but some times (rarelly) i think it takes a bit longer but i can't swear about this.

I've checked and cleaned the EGR, drained the diesel filter, cleaned allmost plugs under the bonet and air filter, with no success. There's no difference pluging or unpluging the air sensor between the turbo and the air filter housing too. The recent fuel pressure regulator is ok with no leaks.

I've been reading this forum in order to get a clue to my problem and, in fact, i'm getting there because i DO have oil contamination on my ECU red plug witch i've already cleaned but just there...

I'm aware i'll have to replace the injector loom and maybe the injector O rings and washers but i'm intrigued by the fact of this misfiring happening in cold and not in hot... It should misfiring in both situations correct? Could it be a glow plug related issue too? Or perhaps any other thing not related with this?

Any help on this matter will be very well apreciated.

2- I have a good mechanical knowlege on transmitions, diffs, shafts, suspensions and other stuff but i've never worked on engines and i'm woried in the case of replacing the injector loom, witch i see that's a very easy job, i'd like to replace the injector O rings and washers aswell...i'm not sure if this can be a job for me..

My question is, is there any step by step, tutorial or manual with clear info that could allow me to do the work? By the way, it is a sutch a "dificult" work beyond my knowlege because of the degres etc...?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide me on this.

    mate hook in...

doing the injector harness is dead easy

    open the bonnet
    remove the acoustic covering
unplug the injector harness-body harness plug which is at the front right (viewed from the drivers seat) of the engine on the underside of the head.
    remove the rocker cover
remove the reatiners for the injector harness and plugs
push the socket up through the bottom of the head and lift the harness free.

installation of the new harness is those steps reversed swapping the words remove with replace and undo with do up

its that simple and takes all of 20 minutes or so.

its also reccomended to clean the body harness, theres numerous methods suggested on how you go about doing that.

Many thanks Dave for your support but that isn't the point...or my english mistake you...

I have plenty of info about the injector harness and i found it very easy to replace too and i have no doubts for working on that. What i'd like to know is if replacing the injectors O rings and washers is that easy too, witch i dont think so... One time replacing the harness i think it's better remove the injectors too and "renew it". That's the complete injector operation i'd like to do on my td5. If you or someone could provide any link with some kind of tutorial or step by step instructions to do that, it will be well apreciated.

I'd like to know too, what's yours and members opinion about the symptoms i've mentioned on my other post.

    Many thanks.

Is there oil in your ECU?
If so it could explain the cold only as the oil will move around with heat and vehicle movement.

The injectors can be done with care.
Have a look at this thread ...http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...light=injector
I've seen posts of large allen keys used to pry the injector out and my local machine shop used a slide hammer on mine.
DON'T lift on the electrical side.

There are wiser people on here but my tips would be....
Back of the adjusters prior to removing the injector rocker shaft (althogh I didn't).
Keep things in order (each injector is coded to the ECU).
Make sure the "O" rings are not twisted when refittted.
Take care when removing the copper washers (good hints in that thread).
When refitting the rockor shaft pull down evenly and slowly.
Each injector is adjusted till it bottoms out and backed off one turn, there are marks to line up for each injector position.

    Hope this helps you out,

    Hi,

Yes, i do have oil on the ECU red plug...

I hope this operation (replacing injector loom and injectors O rings and washers) solves the case of the misfiring...

Many thanks Alien for the great help and for the thread link, it's a great thread!

I'm only concerned by the fact of not having a torque tool...it's really nedded even having a good feeling?..

    Thank you all again.

Drosa have you got a Nanocom? Before pulling the injectors why not check to see if the cylinders are out of balance? Taking the rocker cover off to do the harness is so easy, why complicate matters if you don't need to? I'd do the harness, clean the rest of it, put it all back together and see if it goes ok. If you are not using lots of fuel or blowing lots of smoke or running rough I would leave the injectors well enough alone...
