    Question TD5 fan removal 2001 S2

    Where may I get the proper tool to remove the fan? My plan is to clean out the intercooler without breaking myself or some thing more expensive.
    As a throw away I'm getting just under 30 mpg out of my machine now at 190,000 klms.

    It is pretty easy to make a tool for the viscous fan. Measure the size of the nut with a vernier, and cut out a notch in a piece of 5mm flat bar, fit it on the nut and give it a gentle wack with a hammer untill it becomes loose.
    Have fun taking the intercooler out, it is a rather fiddly job that requires a bit of patience. I did mine recently when I did the head, I removed and flushed the radiator as well. I didn't do all that much really, but its good to know that it is nice and clean.
    I poured diesel in it, and had it sitting overnight. The next morning I gave it a good shake and poured out the diesel and a fair bit of oil came out with it. I then blew some air through it just to get rid of any excess diesel that might have stayed behind.

    I bought a Falcon fan spanner, and enlarged it slightly with an angle grinder.

    The fan on a TD5 is NORMAL thread.

    Probably a bit late to help you Strangie, but it might help the next person.

    As part of the process of diagnosing a lack of response, I cleaned all intake sensors. When I couldn't see the face of the intake manifold pressure/ temp sensor I decided it might be time for an intake clean.
    I didn't have the right spanner either, but thought i'd give it a go anyway.
    With an able assistant,after undoing all fasteners from the radiater/ IC mounts, we were able to CAREFULLY ease the IC up and out. I'd recommend using a pierce of cardboard on the back face of the core to avoid flattening of the fins.
    It is a two handed job. One pushing the rad back and the other lifting the IC out.
