    Viscous Fan info please

    Today was a hot 40 deg, The Disco Temp gauge sat on just under 1/2 way with the aircon on, occasionally it would creep up to 3/4 then when tavelling at a slower speed and as I slowed in traffic the Viscous fan would roar momentarily and it would settle back just under 1/2. So would it be fair to say it is faulty and only coming on some of the time. After shut down my electric fans run on for the 10 mins after shutdown when I use the A/C

    It sounds normal if it was a Nissan.
    Heat expands oil in fan causing it to "lock" till it cools the radiator, this cools the oil and "Unlocks" the fan.
    With the air cond on the electric fans are wired to run on high preshure in air cond. pipes, so on most of the time, and a timer is used if the motor is shut down while fans are on.
    But it's a Land Rover so no doubt it'l be different

    I know how the fan works, but was wondering if it is coming on too late, It doesn't roar when I first drive off like some have said

    my new viscous coupling comes on with a roar without any noticeable increase in temp on the gauge. The electric fans on our D1 V8 run all the time the AC and circulating fan is switched on. A delay in the coupling operating - and at least your's is working, points to the thermostat - which are very small, possibly stuffed, or the rad is blocked thereby delaying the heat transfer to the coupling - which I guess relies on hot air from the hot rad water passing over it. Problems with water circulation will cause the temp sensor to register 'hot' before the radiator reflects the same temp, and thereby delays hot air passing past the coupling etc etc.
    Get the rad rodded, and replace the thermostat anyway.

    Well, i wouldn't like to say it's on the way out but
    i fitted a new viscous a month or 2 ago, 94V8i (serp belt)
    my temp gauge sits perfectly on the half way mark at normal temp, and as soon as it moves a tad past the viscous is roaring, ive also found on hot days that the viscous is engauged most of the time.

    When i replaced the viscous, i also replaced the thermostat, and had the radiator rodded, the water pump is about a year old,
    i did this because 2 other 96 models i know of the gauge sits just under half, mine still sits on half after all this stuff done.

    Before replacing the viscous take yours off and make sure the little heat coil in the centre of the viscous is clean of grime, so it can expand and contract as it should, this is what controls the oil inside.

    Close but not quite.

    A bi-metal coil spring on the front of the hub reacts with the heat from the radiator causing it to open and close a valve inside the hub opening and closing a valve allowing the oil inside to pass (free spin hub) or get trapped (lock hub).
    Initailly on cold start up, the hub will lock as the oil is still cold and thick. Once it absorbs heat, it thins out then the spring takes over.

    The A/C fans are switched by the A/C operation and do nothing more than provide the extra air a standard fan cant when its idling or stopped to boost the efficiency of the condenser and not allow the gas to boil in the condenser.

    Timer runs on shutdown if its running too hot. It gets this from the switch on the thermostat housing. Switch kicks in at 105C.

    Solution, ditch the viscous and go twin thermo!
