    Auto transmission fluid change?

    Hi,

I'm going to do an ATF change in my 1990 Range Rover Vogue 3.9L V8.

It says in the handbook to change ATF every 40 000KMS or 2 years. Does this mean it is a standard drain and refill or a complete flush?

Can anyone recommend a good ATF?

    Mobil ATF 220 any good?

    Cheers.

They would be talking about a standard pan drop and filter change. A complete flush certainly wouldn't hurt though.

Depends on what you tranny fluid is like, if it smells burnt or is a filthy brown then a full flush would be a good idea. Get a filter kit at least when you change it.

The fluid is kinda clean, but as I purchased the car a few months ago, I dont know when it was last given a transmission service.

I am going to do a filter change but just keen to know what the best transmission fluid is for a 1990 V8 ZF box?

I will be doing the diff and transfer box too.

Personally I'd go to the Penrite website & check........ personal preference.

transmission fluid is for a 1990 V8 ZF box
    ?

Undoubtedly Castrol Transmax Z which is approved by ZF for 4HP22 .

BUT you may not like the price about $90 for 4 litres which is what you need for a partial change.
I have used it now for 50KK or so in my ZF and BW transfer, now at 190KK and perfect.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

I was going to go with the Castrol Transmax M, but did some research after Philip A recommended the Transmax Z which has some good reviews; smooth gear shifts etc.

My only concern is that it is a synthetic fluid. I know that synthetic engine oils are known for leaking, would this be the same for synthetic transmission fluids?

My ZF box already has a couple of minor leaks, normal?

    Cheers!

It may cause existing leaks to get a bit worse as it has a lower falling number.
Mine initially had a leak at the oil pump and the workshop who replaced my rear main had it repaired at the same time. No further leaks since.
