    different head gasket

    just replacing the head asket on my petrol 2.25 and have the new copper head gasket here.

    the problem is that is does not look the same as the one that came out of it. the coolant holes do not exist in some spots between the pushrod holes on the new gasket.

    the front 2 cylinders have only very small coolant holes, much smaller than the original gaskets holes.

    also. in some places on the new gasket, there are just recesses in the gasket (holes in one face of the copper but not through to the other piece backing it) as distinct from holes all the way through. these can be found in places where water galleries exist.

    can anyone explain this to me?

    here is a picture of the same type of gasket i have new. notice the coolant holes are very small. is this a problem?
    prehaps this is why this gasket in the picture has failed?

    can any body tell me if this is a head gasket is suitable? (obviously new, not blown) it seems to have very small coolant holes compared to what came out of the engine but came in the kit stc1567b.

    Try showing us a picture of the new gasket beside the old one instead of two pictures of the old one.

    sorry i am trying but i have not been able to get my computer to upload the photos correctly.

    the gasket that came out of the car is the original copper gasket.

    in the picture provided of the blown gasket you can see how much smaller the holes are for water to pass through. you can even see on that gasket the impressions left in the surface of the full size of each gallery from the head.

    hope this all make sense, still trying to get pics though.

    You've lost me on that one,I had LPG on one of my 2.25's and I fitted the composite diesel gasket as the copper one can't be used and it fitted without an issue,are you sure it is the right one?. Pat

    I am a little confused What I interpret from your first post is that the new gasket has smaller coolant holes than the original.

    What I interpret from quote below is the original gasket has smaller holes than the matching holes in the head. Would love to help here if we can get clarification of exactly what you mean.

    hello.

    sorry for all the confusion, i have managed to get the camera working and have loaded a picture of the two gaskets.

    i hope it is all clear now. you can see the difference in the size of the coolant holes from one gasket to the other.

    i heard somewhere that the coolant holes in the gaskets were made smaller at the front of the engine in an effort to aid cooling to the rear of the block but looking at the new gasket, i would have thought those holes were a bit too small???

    That new gasket looks to me like it is a multi fit.

    The way the small holes have a larger indent around them it looks like you cut/push out to make hole larger.

    I have not seen this before though.

    If you had no heating issues before I would be inclined to make the gasket the same as the old one.

    I would be concerned about a lack of water flow to the head with such small holes.

    Anyone else got an opinion on this (Dave Blknight are you there?)

    I just had another look at the pics. Are the large holes in the old gasket the same size as the matching holes in the head/ block?

    I'm sure someone will provide you soon with an answer you can trust, but in the meantime I can offer this comment.

    I am almost certain that I had a head gasket with tiny holes like the ones in your photo for ten or fifteen years in my Series III 4 cyl petrol. It seemed to do the job.

    I can imagine that a lot less cooling would be needed that far way from the combustion chambers. The trade off, I expect would be improved flow around the places where more cooling was needed.

    Someone will know for sure. I'm just saying I used one like that with no problems for hundreds of thousands of kilometres.

    The smaller holes in the series head Gasket.
    they are larger at the rear for more flow
    as the rear of the engine is the hottest
    Quite common on series gaskets...Mark

    Re read your post the holes that are missing is
    a badly made after market gasket..........
