    water in carbies.

    for those of you who dont know the new thing has had a bad batch of fuel through her.

    heres a technical question from an observation that I made on the first carby I stripped out of the new thing.

    Why might water (and not just a little maybe 20-25mL) still be in the float bowl of the cd175 carby?

    so far
    • the fuel tank has been drained and refilled.
    • 2l of metho was added to the system to help disperse whatever water was left in the system.
    • the fuel pump and filter has been replaced and there is no sign of water in the filter.
    • The car has done 70ish KM with the fresh fuel in it




    this isnt one I have an answer for but I thought it might be worth sharing for technical discussion.

    metho + heat = absorb heaps, cools in carby and condensation creates a puddle in the carby which then needs to be drained.

    happened to me once with a side draught delorto setup and that was the only explanation that did it for me...

    i couldnt see how else it could have occurred.

    Because, water is heavier than fuel, so is sitting on the bottom. You are not draining your fuel bowl enough through running to get the metho to mix with the fuel.

    Your tank pick up is from the bottom so you suck it up, your float bowl is working in a similar fashion to a water trap, you are just skimming it off the top, and are pumping in plenty of fresh fuel to replace what you've used.

    Condensation from water in the sump or coolant leak somewhere that then travels thru the recirculation system from the valve covers ? A wild guess but you never know.

    I was thinking along those lines but then I realised..

    hang on anything more than 10mls in the bottom of the carby is going to be picked up and spat out through the jets and orifice's like it was fuel....

    before you make the statement that its a blocked jet...

    no it wasnt with the engine running the carby can be seen to be atomising something into the airstream. Visual inspection has shown all ports to be clear...
