    Algae In Hydraulic Oil

    Gday

I spent yesterday working on this machine get it going.

We got it going in the end, and took it for a spin down the paddock. It was all good for 5 minutes or so then it wouldn't go. The engine would stall out (if on low revs) and although the machine felt like it wanted to move it wouldn't

So I turned it off for a bit, then fired it up and away it went again for a little bit

In the end the owner read the Service manual and we thought we would check the hyraulic pickup in the tank. So we drained the oil (interesting colour) and had a look at the suction screen

It was all clogged up and wrapped in an algae of some sort

I imagine that this wasn't allowing the pump enough oil, thus robbing it from working.

So we pulled the tank off and cleaned it out, and we'll put fresh oil in and flush it a couple of times.

But what I'd like to know is; is there a product out there similar to diesel conditioner that we can put in the tank to kill the algae off?

I've done a quick search on the net but couldn't find much

    Thanks

Jock I cleaned out the water trap on my defender after 3 months driving around the middle Oz and it was full with algea, there was just a 1/4 film of diesel over the top of it,I also cleaned out the coolant tank on my lathe were I worked once and the stink from the aglea nearly blew my head off!!!.It's a very common thing. I would think a diesel algae control additive would suffice for hydraulic oil. Not much difference in consistency. There are plenty of diesel additives. I am sure one my BIL uses in his diesel is also suitable for light oils. Can not remember the name of it though, truck workshops, caterpillar etc should be able to point you in the right direction. Maybe do a search for biocide.

drain the hydraulics, flush it with a 50/50 mix of hyd oil and diesel thats been dosed with biocide or similar to the correct ratio for the total volume of fluid you have.

Drain and refill with the correct oil.

If its a plastic tank I advise replacing the tank.
